Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板 (or Yakisugi) is an ancient Japanese wood burning technique. Traditionally, Sugi (also called Japanese cedar) was used. The process involves charring a piece of wood, cooling it, cleaning it, and finishing it with natural oil. It is an environmentally friendly way to preserve wood sealing out moisture, insects, and (paradoxically) make it fire resistant. Our two piece cherry wood set displays the before and after process. We think its hauntingly beautiful. Measures 7.25 inches square.
